Drooping and hooded eyelids
A heavy, drooping eyelid can add years and make the eyes look tired. A laser eyelid lift tightens the skin with no incisions and no recovery time. Here we will assess whether this is a case for a laser treatment or rather for a medical consultation.
What drooping and hooded eyelids are
In an aesthetic context, a “drooping eyelid” most often means excess and lax skin on the upper eyelid, which begins to hood over the lash line. It gives a heavy, tired look — sometimes even after a good night’s sleep. It is the result of the loss of collagen and elastin, years of blinking and the pull of gravity.
One distinction matters, though. An aesthetic excess of skin (dermatochalasis) is not the same as true ptosis — a drooping eyelid caused by muscle weakness, which may have a medical basis and requires a medical assessment. The laser treatment works on skin laxity, not on mechanical ptosis. That is why we always start with an assessment.
See the details
Where the eyelid skin is lax, the non-surgical answer is a laser eyelid lift (SmoothEye). Controlled, non-ablative heat contracts collagen and tightens the skin of the eyelid — with no incisions and without taking you out of your routine. It is a good option for people who do not want, or do not yet qualify for, eyelid surgery.
Realistically: the laser improves firmness and the heaviness of the eyelid, but where there is a very large excess of skin or true ptosis, what it can achieve is limited — and then we say so plainly, referring you to a surgeon or an ophthalmologist. That honesty is our standard, not the exception.
Experience you can rely on
The laser eyelid lift is one of our most frequently performed treatments for the eye area — we have been working with it for years.

Where drooping eyelids come from
Laxity and excess skin
The loss of collagen and elastin means the eyelid skin loses firmness and begins to hood.
Gravity and the passing years
Years of blinking and the pull of gravity gradually lower the line of the eyelid.
Predisposition and ptosis
Sometimes the cause is muscle weakness (ptosis) — that calls for a medical assessment rather than an aesthetic treatment.
Recognise your case
Lax eyelid skin
Excess and laxity of the upper eyelid skin — the most common, aesthetic case, and an indication for the laser.
A large excess of skin
Clearly hooding skin — the laser improves firmness, but where the excess is large we consider surgery.
True ptosis
Drooping caused by weakness of the levator muscle — this requires a medical or ophthalmological consultation.

Book a consultationHow we help with drooping eyelids
Where the eyelid skin is lax we work with the laser — with no incisions. We start with an assessment, to separate an aesthetic excess of skin from ptosis that needs a doctor. The options have their own pages with the details.
SmoothEye — laser eyelid lift
Non-ablative tightening of the eyelid skin with no incisions and no recovery time — for laxity and the heaviness of the eyelid.
3-Step Eye Lift
A combined protocol for the eye area that strengthens and consolidates the tightening of the eyelids.
A quick comparison of the options
| Method | What it does | Who it is for | Timing / course |
|---|---|---|---|
| SmoothEye | Tighter eyelid skin, a lighter look | Lax eyelid skin (dermatochalasis) | A course of 3 treatments |
| 3-Step Eye Lift | Comprehensive support for the eye area | When you want a full protocol and a lasting result | A programme — plan after a consultation |
| A medical consultation | Assessment and direction of treatment | Suspected ptosis or a large excess of skin | After assessment |
Let us talk about how we can help you — we will take care of the rest
We start with a conversation
You describe how the eyelid looks and what bothers you — heaviness, hooding, tired-looking eyes.
Assessment
We tell skin laxity from ptosis — that determines whether the laser is the right method.
The laser treatment
Where it is indicated we carry out a course of laser eyelid lifts, with no incisions.
Reviewing the result
We check the firmness after the course and plan any maintenance.
What the research says
Tightening the eyelid skin without incisions rests on the documented action of the laser — controlled heat contracts collagen. Below is the evidence for the method.
Reduction of under-eye bags and eyelid lines
A study of the non-ablative, long-pulse 2940 nm Er:YAG laser (30 patients, 3 sessions) showed a significant reduction in the volume of under-eye bags and in lines around the eye — with no ablation.
Periocular Er:YAG, 2021. PubMed →The laser contracts collagen in the eyelid skin
A paper comparing lasers demonstrated measurable collagen contraction and tightening of the eyelid skin under laser energy — the basis of the non-surgical eyelid lift.

Whether the laser will help is decided by the nature of the problem — skin laxity yes, true ptosis needs a doctor. That is why an assessment precedes every treatment.
Informational and educational material — it does not replace a medical consultation. Results are individual and depend on the concern, the method and the number of treatments.

Frequently asked questions about drooping eyelids
Will the laser lift a drooping eyelid?
A laser eyelid lift tightens lax eyelid skin and makes the eyes look lighter. Where there is a large excess of skin or true ptosis the effect is limited — and then we will honestly point you towards a surgical or ophthalmological consultation.
How does it differ from eyelid surgery?
Blepharoplasty (surgery) removes excess skin with a scalpel and gives the strongest result where the hooding is substantial. The laser tightens the skin with no incisions and no recovery time — an option for skin laxity, when you do not want, or do not yet qualify for, surgery.
How do I know whether it is laxity or ptosis?
That is exactly what we establish at your consultation. Ptosis — drooping from muscle weakness — requires a medical assessment. An aesthetic excess of skin (dermatochalasis) is an indication for the laser. Telling the two apart is key to both safety and the result.
How safe is the treatment near the eye?
The risk is low when it is performed by an experienced specialist, with proper eye protection and correctly chosen settings. We start with an assessment and a review of contraindications.
How long does the effect last?
After a course, the tightening effect usually lasts more than a year, depending on the skin. Maintenance helps to extend the result. We discuss the specifics at your consultation.
How much does it cost?
The cost depends on the number of treatments in the course. You will find the price of the treatment on the laser eyelid lift page; we agree the plan and the quote at your consultation. (Price list — to be completed.)
